SYSTEM-IRA

Systemira is an interactive installation that confronts viewers with algorithmic bias. Users stand before a simulated facial recognition scanner, which generates a data visualization of their face on an LED screen. The software randomly accepts or rejects users, illustrating how individuals are reduced to data points and evaluated by a biased system shaped by capitalist values.
The project began with extensive research into the challenges posed by AI automation, including data privacy and algorithmic bias. Recognizing the complexity of educating the public on these issues, we chose to focus specifically on algorithmic bias. Systemira's interactive nature emphasizes how algorithms can unfairly judge individuals based on unseen criteria, prompting viewers to question the fairness of such systems in real-world applications.
The installation engages viewers through a participatory experience, where they can see their data manipulated in real time. This fosters a connection between the audience and the artwork, enabling them to explore the implications of algorithmic bias in an approachable manner. By using interactive art, Systemira aims to educate and empower individuals to engage in discussions about AI's impact on society.
Systemira highlights the transformative power of interactive art in raising awareness about algorithmic bias. By encouraging viewers to reflect on their experiences and the systems that judge them, the installation fosters deeper engagement with the ethical implications of AI. Although the primary footage of the exhibit is lost, the project succeeded in generating intrigue and discussion around the topic, emphasizing the need for ongoing dialogue about AI and its societal effects.
