I was part of a team investigating the potential of augmented reality (AR) technology to enhance user experiences in the luxury resale market. Our client, RETORVRS, focuses on buying and selling second-hand luxury goods by leveraging web3 and blockchain technology, incorporating AR features specifically aimed at selling digital twins for 3D models. Through this innovative approach, RETORVRS aims to transform how users interact with luxury resale items.

Process
Over the course of one month, my colleagues Briana Jones, Ziyi Chen, and I conducted extensive UX research to identify pain points experienced by luxury resale shoppers, particularly those new to pre-owned items. We discovered that users often struggle with concerns related to fit and quality due to the absence of physical try-on options and insufficient product information. Despite the availability of AR tools—such as photogrammetry for creating digital twins and 3D product previews—we observed a concerningly low level of user engagement with these features. This lack of interaction undermined customer confidence in product fit and quality, diminishing their perception of overall value and leading to hesitation in making purchases.

Identified Challenges
  1. Limited Engagement with AR Features: Users were not effectively utilizing the existing AR tools, which hindered their shopping experience.
  2. Concerns Over Fit and Quality: The inability to physically try on items and the lack of comprehensive product details contributed to user uncertainty.
  3. Insufficient Product Information: Many users felt that detailed descriptions and high-quality images were lacking, making it difficult to gauge the true value of the items.

Proposed Solutions
To address these challenges, we devised targeted strategies to encourage luxury resale app users, particularly newcomers, to actively engage with the existing AR features. Our objective is to create an intuitive and engaging user experience that enhances confidence and satisfaction during the purchasing journey while facilitating a seamless transition into the luxury resale market. Some of our strategies include:
  • Enhancing the AR Experience: We are refining the AR functionalities to allow users to switch seamlessly between “Try On” and “Tap to Place” modes, providing a more versatile interaction with products.
  • Improving Tutorial Accessibility: By redesigning the tutorial process and ensuring it’s easily accessible, we aim to help users understand how to effectively utilize AR features.
  • Increasing Visibility of Key Features: We plan to incorporate visual distinctions in the AR marketplace, making it clear which items are user-owned versus those available for sale.

Impact and Future Directions
While the implementation of our project is ongoing, initial findings have been promising, suggesting that AR technology holds significant potential to transform user engagement in the luxury resale market. The insights we've gathered will play a crucial role in shaping future developments and strategies for integrating AR features that enhance the overall shopping experience. Ultimately, we aim to foster customer confidence, drive sales in the luxury resale sector, and create a vibrant community around pre-owned luxury goods.

I am excited about the journey ahead and look forward to continuing our efforts to elevate the luxury resale market through innovative technology and user-centered design.
